My Love affair with

I moved to St. Louis, MO in June 2012.

Zach and I found a beautiful 4 family style apartment right across from Tower Grove Park in South City.

I immediately fell in love with the 1900's architecture and charm. Being right off the park was incredible. We took long walks, bike rides, played in a softball league and even took our engagement photos in Tower Grove Park. We loved it.

Amid living our happily ever after, well life happened. I thought I was adulting super hard but missed the fact that not only had my license plates expired, I never transferred over my personal property tax from St. Charles County.

I now introduce you to my week of crashing back down to feeling naive, helpless and, well, dumb. Super dumb.

I am a by-the-books, rule follower. The idea of being insubordinate on not only my plates, but my taxes?! Ugh.

Phone call after phone call of dead ends, just trying to figure out what I had to do to get settled up with my personal property tax and vehicle plates.

Everyone forwarded me to another person who always told me I needed to go to the Collectors office in person.

In person? What century are we in?!

Well, apparently we are in a past one because the place I was sent to was like an enchanted castle.

I took off work early and headed to my Collector of Revenue's office at the St. Louis City Hall in downtown. I have driven by this place so many times, just never really thought further than how creepy awesome it looked!

Today, I had the absolute pleasure of getting to go inside.
Visiting City Hall to pay expensive personal property taxes and a renewal on my license plates in any other setting would have made me absolutely miserable. I would have been so upset upon leaving and just annoyed with the whole process.

I am a sucker for old architecture and nothing else mattered so long as my curiosity could wander, photos could be snapped and a few questions to the security guard could be answered. I was blissful with my random and unexpected Thursday adventure.

I can't tell you when it began but I could try. My grandma, aunts and even an uncle have always had their hands in the soil. I always thought weeding was a big bummer but only after owning a home and garden of my own, truly appreciated what they were doing(or rather growing).

It was always my favorite growing up, aside from collecting shiny rocks, to walk their property and collect pretty things to make arrangements with. It's my dream to have the same around my own home. Here are some of the beauties I found and arranged from my parents house.
Caught up in love with some flowers. This was during a college trip to New York. I haven't met too many flowers I didn't like. Or maybe I was just so excited to see something green in the city for once. I will call it a tie between the two.
In college, I was able to study abroad in London. During a walk home with my flat mates, we came across the most beautiful, flowering tree. It was just snowing petals so whimsically. I collected some of the blooms and made an arrangement for my room.
Of course, so many things about my time in London were magical...

Portabella Market in London was one of my favorite places ever. So eclectic, colorful and free. I took one of my favorite photos while there of a Wild at Heart florist shop. I got to take home a little floral treasure with me that day.
I went to school to study fashion, so you bet we had "fashion shoots". This one was actually for Sseko Designs. My friend Jen took the photos and I think always just gravitate my body to the greenery. Climb that tree and lay on it? No problem! Lay on the cold wet grass, absolutely! Pretend to pick flowers, oh was I supposed to pretend? Can I keep these...?
One of the few photos I have seen from my actual college graduation ceremony. I felt so lucky to have found it on the school's website shortly after and it happens to be one I am most fond of. Stephens (my college) gave each of us girls(yes it was an all girls school) a Gerber daisy. It was so special and sweet. I do have to admit, think I mostly like like this photo because it showed off my favorite ring I got while in London and my manicure with the best nail polish color ever: Essy Lucky Lucky Lavendar!
After college, I moved to New York. I was overwhelmed by the amount of gorgeous, fresh flowers everywhere. Why are they EVERYWHERE in New York. Yes, everywhere.
I would buy myself a $10 bouquet almost every week to keep in my room. It was the most wonderful thing. I still can't believe how you could get a $10 bouquet of a dozen roses and a great mani/pedi for $19 in New York. Those were about the only cheap things in that city.
I was so fortunate to have had such amazing friends and neighbors in Astoria, New York. Me, Farzie and Michelle would drive out to Mattituck, Long Island to spend time on the beach, visit the wineries and shops around town. It was possibly the most relaxing weekends I've ever had. I day dream of our time there often.

More from our walking trip of Long Island. Just breathtaking...and this doesn't even touch on the ocean views beyond the amber fields. It's like nature exploded out of a national geographic magazine here.
My friend Farzie introduced me to the floral shop of my dreams. It was by her work, at the time, in Long Island City, NY. It was called {fLo rE sta}. She always came home with the prettiest and most unique arrangements. I had to visit and I had to have one. The shop was full of vintage silver and mercury glass containers. It was a place I wanted to be in forever. It was stunning and a huge inspiration for me that I still draw back on today as I embark on my floral dreams (or rather reality).
This was my favorite arrangement while in New York. Farzie gave it to me as a parting gift as I was moving from New York back to Missouri. It was from {fLo rE sta} and was so little but so complex. Ever since, I have wanted to make an arrangement with a baby cabbage flower. One day, little baby. One. day...
The array of fresh flowers, plants and decor is stunning. The light and warmth pours through the greenhouse, giving life and vibrance to all the plants inside. It is breathtaking.

Walking through carefully and quietly as if to not disturb the peace and tranquility of the room. Looking around in awe as if in a priceless art gallery of all your favorite pieces, only they are all of your favorite plants and flowers. It is magical.
As a St. Louisan and floral lover, I should have known that on Lasalle Street in South St. Louis was the magical Florist Row. I think the universe was keeping me from it until I reached a certain maturity in which I could handle it. Well, the universe introduced me a little prematurely because I was absolutely overwhelmed by all of the beauty, magic and life within the sprawling complex.
Maybe you are wondering how I got here. I kind of forgot that part too...through all my gawking.
Fate played a hand in this visit. About 3 years ago, I was newly engaged and hitting up all of the bridal shows I could. I had the pleasure of meeting Angela Lopez of Elegance in Bloom at one of the bridal shows. I immediately fell in love with her unique arrangements and became immediately interested in having her create our wedding florals.
After many meetings, emails and texts we designed together the most magical arrangements for my wedding. They were far more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. What does this have to do with ending up at the floral market?
Angie took me on a full tour of Baisch and Skinner. Through the green house, flower cooler, greenery cooler and even across the street to the arrangement accessory and decor haven. I was in love with everything and of course could have stayed for hours taking in all of the beautiful sights and scents.
I ended up leaving with a box full of succulents, a few air plants and a heart so heavy I thought I might just explode with tiny emoji hearts all over the sidewalk!
I did mention earlier that I forgot where I parked? At the first sign of the building, I stopped and parked right there, half way down the block. I was so happy and excited that I sprinted all the way back to the car. Just so much JOY you guys.

A huge thank you to Angie and the wonderful people at Baisch and Skinner for allowing me to come visit!
I always have. As a kid, I wanted to work at a florist. When I got to highschool, I found that in my town only family lines and old ladies worked in floral shops. So my "dream" was shot but I didn't stop loving.
I loved making bouquets out of twigs, bushes or buds from the yard to make random arrangements. It always hurt a little to see them die inside though. I love bringing the outdoors inside to live.

Keeping plants alive has never been my thing though. >>Somewhere deep inside are feelings and ambitions that are just waiting to grow<<

My love for plant did not come from a gift with them. To be quite frank, I hated plants. Well, they hated me first. They say I killed them, I say they died. Regardless they never made it. Until one random trip to the grocery store changed everything.

>>The original Peace Lily<<

I went to buy some flowers for my house. I often did this because I love LOVE flowers and enjoy having them in the house when people came over. It just makes everything look photo perfect, fresh and alive.
That day, I saw a pretty little green plant. It was cheaper than the flowers I typically purchased. Instructions were straight forward. Though there were no flowers on this plant(yet), it looked like something I could handle.
Not only did I handle it, it grew! It grew all these beautiful flowers and I learned it was a Peace Lily. I fell in love with growing my home decor right then and there.

>>I wanted basil. What I got was more...a lot more<<

After success with the lily, I dabbled in growing a tiny herb garden. It started with just wanting basil. I love making pita pizzas and always purchase fresh basil so why not pluck from my own back yard?
The herb garden didn't do well, it did great! It out grew its tiny plot almost over night. I could hardly keep up with it but had more than enough basil, mint, dill weed and others (I can't remember) to last us all summer.

We had a gorgeous fall in Missouri. My outside plants stayed in full bloom way longer than expected. My gardens grew almost effortlessly.

With the cold came longer days spent inside and my budget for purchasing real flowers to bring life indoors dwindled as home expenses increased. Not to mention, I have cats that love to eat plants, flowers especially. I wasn't into buying flowers that had to be locked in a room to be forgotten and die.

On a random trip to Home Depot, I got stuck in the plant section. If only I could grow my arrangements and just bring them out when I wanted. Then, I wouldn't have to buy flowers every time I had guests. They would be growing on deck for the occasion. Smart.

I purchased some potting essentials and started with about 6 arrangements. I loved planting them. My heart exploded with my new creations. It was euphoric.

I scattered my arrangements throughout my house and thought of clever ways to display them.

I was addicted. It seemed everyone else was too. I received an amazing response to my new hobby. My sweet little creations haven't just grown and served as home decor, they've helped me find a part of myself I never knew I had.

Apparently, this piece of me is deeply rooted and shared by many of my family members, past and present. What an honor to be compared to my aunts, uncles, grandparents and even great-grandparents and their effortless skill with plants.

I wouldn't call this a gift. It's a blessing and I am so thankful. Now, grow little babies, grow.

>>I've been feeling an increasingly strong tug to start a blog.<<
This is a feeling I've felt for years and never felt strongly for. Who would want to read what I have to say? Perhaps someone? Likely no one.
I took to journaling for a minute but found my hands moved slower than my thoughts when pen hit paper. I am more fluid on keys.
I have been collecting photos, experiences and ideas with all intentions of starting them somewhere.
As fate would have it, in 2009 I started this blog. Long since forgotten and dusty from 7 years of neglect, she was still beautiful, strong and most importantly she was still me. She was true. I hadn't strayed far and so here I am.

Hello, world. I made one and really love it! The light colors work delicately together to create an antique motif, carried on by the metal details in the necklace and clutch. Quite honestly, I could do without the shoes. I love the color but would rather have something with a platform and perhaps a side button detail.

pretty lady-2 by Laura Bross featuring 1928 jewelry

Items in this set:
TFNC Miu Miu Pleat Dress | TFNC Dresses @ USC, 39 GBP
Floral Slash Velvet Jacket, $150
J. I am drawn to them with delight but are they really what they seem?
On one hand they are my future, luminous and bright. On the other they are deceiving, shadowing dangers of the night.

Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11289553776521492395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2041092381994423718.post-10656763981721188882009-12-21T22:10:00.000-08:002009-12-21T22:22:31.205-08:00Goodwill Hunting- Part 2What a pleasant surprise it was to be taken to a Goodwill I did not know existed. So it seems the Goodwill gene runs in the family.
In other words, I got it from my momma.
I was greeted at the Chesterfield Goodwill by Dior trench....oh hello! Would not be worth the trip if the treasure was not buried somewhere. Finding Dior was too easy, and too big (size wise) actually. So, I left him for some vintage sweaters.
My mom asks, "how can you spot the good stuff". "I am a seasoned professional", I say. Not really, I just said, "umm, look for something cool and if it says something I recognize, I put it back." Unless it is one of my designer friends. Then, I invite them into my cart.
With these bargain shopper habits, I hope to support the little guy for a while. By that I mean my wallet...it is so very small.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11289553776521492395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2041092381994423718.post-68551726530544038322009-12-19T22:29:00.000-08:002009-12-19T23:08:00.375-08:00Recycled WRapperToday
was filled with a lot of learning.
most days are.
this day i enjoyed my experiences.

1. opening is better than closing.
2. be a bitch to a bitch= free lip gloss...?
3. tapas means a lot of things.
4. i am a mini sushi rollin machine
5. sushi is an awesome, edible art
6. banzai is amazing. look it up. purchase it. you will love it.
7. Newspaper= great wrapping paper....gives a whole new meaning to recycled WRapper

Meaning of today's experiences:
*1. in retail, during holiday, in the cold, put me at the mall as early as you want. i get a parking spot. i get there long before the crazies. i get to leave just when things get hectic. retail worker's perfection.
*2. every experience i have had at a fragrance counter has been interesting, to say....the very least. i am definitely a daisy girl. daisy girl lover/ fragrance sales lady rubbed her nose across my saturated wrist and told me so. DKNY be delicious lady was curious. she prompted a sale with lots of free stuff but only gave up some. then she was not nice. then i became not nice. then i got free lip gloss. if that didn't make sense. i am aware. if it did. tell me what it means.
*3. tapas and sushi party became more like every kind of cheese and some sushi party. which is cool. my hips will be more insulated all winter now.
*4. my sushi comes in huge, monster roll and teeny baby. i became so amused with creating itty bitty sushi rolls and began to wonder if there is a world record for smallest?
*5. it became such an amusement that i began disecting the little baby rolls and reconstructing them into interesting shapes...photos to come soon. way more interested in making than eating.
*6. as far as i am concerned, bansai is the coolest game i have ever seen/played. that could keep a whole room attentive and interactive for hours. and of course it was turned into a drinking game.
*7. Its all about being different(+/-). if you get a gift from me for xmas, it will be wrapped in the st.louis post dispatch. even made newspaper bows and ribbon...proud moment right there. just call me the recycled WRapper.

long day. felt like a whole weekend. it was awesome.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11289553776521492395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2041092381994423718.post-28785543276383108032009-12-18T17:45:00.000-08:002009-12-18T17:56:21.316-08:00Goodwill HuntingI love goodwill.

I actually think that I have lost complete interest in the mall or any organized shopping experience. I love the rush of finding those buried treasures among heaping piles of potential Halloween costumes.
If you know me at all....you'd know I am pretty cheap these days. This does not mean I do not appreciate the finer things, I just can't realistically afford to purchase them myself. Yet!
I did run across an Oscar de la Renta blouse at GW...and subtly yelled, "NO WAY!"
It has become quite evident that I was born in the wrong decade as everything I tend to bring home reminds my mom of what my grandma used to wear. What a compliment!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11289553776521492395noreply@blogger.com0
